I create art for love, peace and joy because I wholeheartedly believe that all human beings need art and creativity in our lives as a way to more fully express and enjoy our humanity. Whether it is in the form of appreciating a work of art and experiencing what it evokes, or in the process of creating with mind, heart and hands, we all need a space of joy and fulfillment, healing and renewal. Art, in any form, provides that space.

Tanya Torres is a Puerto Rican artist and writer living and working in New York City. She graduated from the City College of New York, C.U.N.Y., with a B.A. in Art Education, and an M.F.A. in Printmaking and Painting. Her artwork has been presented at the United Nations Organization, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies Library, the Museum of the 19th Century Dominican Family Dominican Republic, the Porta Coeli Museum in Puerto Rico, the Prague Congress Centre and the Bronx Library Center NYPL, among other cultural and educational institutions. Her paintings and murals are on permanent display at St. Mark’s Church in the Lower East Side, the James Weldon Johnson Leadership Academy/P.S.57 and the East Harlem Bilingual Head Start in East Harlem, New York City.

Art for love, peace and joy
Tanya Torres is an artist and writer. She grew up in San Germán, Puerto Rico, and at 15 she went to live in New York. After completing a B.A. in Art Education at The City College of New York, she won a scholarship to complete her M.F.A. or Master of Fine Arts, in the same institution. She also studied at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, and took courses at the University of Alcalá de Henares in Spain and Columbia University.
In the year 2000, Tanya created an artistic space called Mixta Gallery in New York City. This experience helped her to train as a cultural organizer and gallerist, and to continue her development as an educator. Since then her work has been presented at the United Nations Organization, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies in New York, the Museum of the Dominican Family of the 19th Century in the Dominican Republic, the Porta Coeli Museum of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture in San Germán, the Museum of the Próceres in Cabo Rojo and the Prague Convention Center in the Czech Republic, among many other organizations and cultural spaces in Puerto Rico, the United States and the world.
Tanya has read stories for children at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and has taken her artistic and educational projects as traveling exhibitions and workshops around the world, such as Batey Palmarejo in the Dominican Republic and the Special Communities of Puerto Rico.
She has published several books of poetry made by hand: Caguana(1994), Laberinto(1995), My Bestiary(2001), I Can Certainly Survive(2002), Cuerpo de batalla / Battle Body(2004) and Sagrario(2007). In 2010, she published Canción de la Magdalenawith Raquel Z. Rivera. In 2007, she published Peace Body: Repercussions of the Battleabout life after surviving cancer. Her most recent books are Destellos de Sofía, of mystical poetry, and a translation into English, Sophia's Light.
Tanya’s work has been recognized by several publications and institutions, such as El Nuevo Día, the Journal of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture and Review 94: CCNY Latino / Latin American Writers' Issue. In 2002, El Diario / La Prensa in New York selected her as one of the 50 Women of the Year. In 2003, the Puerto Rican Studies Center invited her to be part of the "Puerto Rican Writers: History and Context" project, which provides a space to preserve their documents.
Her artistic work has been published in numerous covers of books and magazines, such as Sagewoman Magazine, the agenda Re'velles of France and Agenda Mujer in Colombia.
Between 2007-2010, she was an artist in residence at James Weldon Johnson / P.S. 57 in New York City, where he created 3 mosaic murals and 6 murals with poetry. Her mosaics are also found in the East Harlem Bilingual Head Start, where she created a series of digital paintings inspired by the institution's mission to help create good eating habits in families.
Her exhibition Heaven and Earthtraveled to Prague in 2012, and then traveled to various places in the United States during 2013.
Her mural, Carta de Amor a San Germán, created in 2016, is located on Ángel Casto Pérez Avenue in San Germán, Puerto Rico.
In 2016, she published her book Painting Mary Magdalene, Little Miracles and Transformatios Along the Creative Path She also periodically creates an artistic event entitled The Mary Magdalene Celebration, where she brings together artists from different disciplines that explore the theme of Mary Magdalene in the context of a traditional Puerto Rican Promesaor Offering . This project began in 2010 when she presented her first series on the subject of Mary Magdalene in conjunction with the musical compositions of Raquel Z. Rivera, and has evolved over the years to take the present form. It has been presented in New York, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and several places of Puerto Rico. On her blog and website, Magdalene.org, she explores the connection between creativity and spirituality through the theme of Mary Magdalene.
In the spring of 2018, Tanya established a new workshop in San Germán, Puerto Rico.

Tanya Torres es artista y escritora. Creció en San Germán, Puerto Rico, y a los 15 años fue a vivir a Nueva York. Luego de completar un B.A. en Educación y Arte en The City College of New York, obtuvo una beca para completar su M.F.A. o Maestría en Bellas Artes, en la misma institución. Estudió también en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Mayagüez y tomó cursos en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares en España y Columbia University.
En el año 2000, creó un espacio artístico llamado Mixta Gallery en la Ciudad de Nueva York. Esta experiencia la ayudó a entrenarse como organizadora cultural y galerista, y a continuar su desarrollo como educadora. Desde entonces su trabajo se ha presentado en la Organización de Naciones Unidas, el Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños en Nueva York, el Museo de la Familia Dominicana del Siglo 19 en la República Dominicana, el Museo Porta Coeli del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña en San Germán, el Museo de los Próceres en Cabo Rojo y el Centro de Convenciones de Praga en la República Checa, entre muchas otras organizaciones y espacios culturales en Puerto Rico, Estados Unidos y el mundo.

Este proyecto comenzó en 2010 cuando presentó su primera serie sobre el tema de María Magdalena en conjunto con las composiciones musicales de Raquel Z. Rivera y ha evolucionado a través de los años hasta tomar la forma presente. Ha sido presentado en Nueva York, Pennsilvania, Nuevo México, y varios lugares de Puerto Rico.
